WATCHES LONGINES : If one really wants a *smoothe* second hand, Ithink the above advice is 100% correct: Get anAccutron (a tuning fork driven watch). (Walt Odetswrote an interesting Horologium essay in the Accutron,in which he explained that it is a horologically interestingand also a well made watch.)But back to Rolex and other mechanical watches.Taking the Rolex as an example, it DOES NOT havea smoothely moving second hand: The second hand JUMPS4 times per second. You can see this if you look a bit closely (you do not have to look too closely:it's not something that requires a magnifying glassto see!).On the other hand, if the question is whether thesecond hand on a watch moves *relatively* smoothely,as opposed to jumping once per second, then I am notaware of any mechanical watch that would nothave a smoothely moving (by this definition) second hand.To make the second hand of a mechanical watch tojump once per second, it seems to me, would requireextra mechanism, since the natural rate of thesecond hand (and of the minute and hour hands, too)of a mechanical watch is determined by the rate ofthe escapement, which, I believe, is usually between3 and 5 "beats" per second (in most watches, you canhear this as "tick tick tick...")....

Looking at the Longines Conquest VHP L1.632.4.56.6 or it's cousinwith gold or the Omega Constellation Perpetual Calendar 1252.30.00.Want to know the diameter of the case and how thick the watch is.Hoping they might be nearly as thin as my Pulsar PSR-10, which is notdressy but keeps fantastic time.Looking for something more dressy and "classy" looking.I don't have the information you requested on the Longines, but for theOmega the case diameter is 35.5 mm and the height is 9.3 mm.As for not finding these watches in Atlanta - I've seen the Conquestquartz and the Conquest Chronograph at Helzberg Diamonds at Gwinnett PlaceMall. I was told that they could order the Automatic (didn't ask about theVHP Perpetual Calendar).

The magazine is not very new though, so the prices are probably a little higher now. WATCHES LONGINES : To celebrate the seventieth anniversary of Lindbergh's solo crossing ofthe Atlantic from New York to Paris on 20th May 1927, and the launch ofa special collection of Lindbergh watches, Longines are to unveil anunique site on the world wide web.The centerpiece will be a flight simulation where visitors to or will be able to fly Lindbergh'sroute using a special java application. The challenges will includetaking off with a heavy load of fuel from Roosevelt Field, New Jersey,negotiating cloud cover where the engine can freeze and navigatingacross the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, the visitor will haveto land the plane in Paris Le Bourget. Timing for the online challengewill be provided by Longines, who were responsible for the timing of theoriginal Lindbergh flight.
