If you weregoing to wear a watch beyond civilization for a couple of years thenautos make some sense because if the battery goes dead, there is norecourse in the jungle or the Arctic. Otherwise the market picks quartzbecause it offers more and thus also more value for the money.

The prices would be ridiculous, the manufacturerswould get sued into oblivion about safety problems, the performance andhandling would stink compared to modern sports cars and the carcompanies would sell so few that they'd lose a fortune "preserving amechanical art". To preserve mechanical art do what the people who want1957 Vette's do, buy a vintage watch and get it restored.There are more Casio G-Shocks used in space by American shuttle crewsthan anything else. The champ for space wearer hours were Poljots usedby Mir crews by edict. Even they had some quartz watches sent intospace.

Retail salespeople are "spiffed" largeamounts to sell mechanicals (spiff being a term which means additionalcommision, and we all know who pays this "commision" in the end) andeach salesperson can have a quota of mechanical watches they MUST sell.This means that a salesperson might fudge the truth if they see anyreaction in a buyers eyes that will help them sell a mechanical watch.I think vintage watches are great, wind-up dress watches are veryinteresting too. Themechanical manual wind watch was said to be "obselete" by 1966 due tothe automatic and electric watches and the number sold has declinedevery year since. I have a Jaeger Lecoultre Master Quartz from the 70swhich takes a varta v76 or eveready 357 battery and it still keeps timeto within one minute per year. This battery will be around for at least20 more years because it is used in millions of cameras and JL saysthey will upgrade the movement to another one if the battery everbecomes unavailable.
