WATCHES OMEGA WATCHES : I like preserving mechanical watches. Like many forms of old technologylike, cars without computer technology, prop airplanes, rotary dialtelephones, belt driven dental drills, mechanical calculators, andfountain pens they are worth preserving as examples of ingenuity. Theseobselete forms of technology are interesting to look at and some caneven be made to perform reasonably well, but none of them have anythingto do with silly mythology about whether manly-men use old technologynor can they make any important statements about the wearer's coolness.The reason why most of the world uses quartz watches when there aremechanical watches available that cost less than the battery in aquartz watch is that quartz watches are more accurate, more rugged,require less maintainance and will be right there with the correct timeeven if the owner sets them down for a week or two in order to wearanother watch. By its willingness to use mostly quartz watches whethermade by Patek Phillipe, Rolex, IWC, Swatch or even without brands, theworld is willing to pay more for a cheap quartz watch than a cheapermechanical watch because quartz is simply better in many ways.
WATCHES OMEGA WATCHES : It is sad that anyone's ego is so small that they have to try toimpress someone by wearing a watch with a brand name hoping to makepeople think they are better than they really are. No one should everbe impressed by the watch anyone wears. Obviously anyone can becomePresident of the United States by wearing a Timex. Al Capone used towear a Rolex and he enjoyed showing it off to people thinking theywould think better of him because of it.I wouldn't fly in a prop aircraft to go on vacation just because propsare "cooler". I wouldn't use an old car to drive to work every day. Imight use an old car on a collector's day rally. I might use a fountainpen on a special occasion too. However, I believe there is another way of looking atthese things.Just to follow one of your analogies, certainly a prop plane would be a poorchoice for a vacation if your goal were simply to reach a destination. But Ihave often though it would be wonderful to fly a bi-plane across the countryas a vacation. Imagine piloting a beautiful old plane across the landscape.I think it would be fun. The important part would be the journey, not thedestination.For me it is the same with mechanical watches. If I just wanted the time onmy wrist, a quartz would indeed be the best choice. An interestingmechanical watch gives me more than just the time. I am continuallyfascinated by an intricate little device created by talented hands. Windingthe crown on my 1950's Hamilton Bradford connects me to another, simplertime.

What is irritating are the constant noises made by people whosuggest the biplane technology of a mechanical watch makes it somehowbetter for everyday use stricly because it is "cooler" or "moremasculine" as if second best performance and old technology are somehowsigns of "coolness". Wearing mechanical watches is often a response bylabel whores to high pressure advertising that plays on smaller egoswith it's pitchline, "Wear our mechanical watch and people will thinkyou are better than you really are, especially since you paid more forits performance than the quartz version of the same watch that ourcompany makes.
