WATCHES ROLEX WATCH : Yes, winding watches are still made. Many military/adventure suppliers stillcarry the Timex G.I. watch. They are relatively inexpensive (say around $50).You also have the option of purchasing self-winding watches. Rolex watchesare extremely durable (I own a 15 year old Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date. ..yes, I was influenced by Jerry Ahern. . .heck, I even have a brace ofDetonics Combat Masters!). But even the stainless steel (least expensiveversion) costs around $3200. Now Rolex does have a "downscaled" line called"Tudor", but a Tudor Submariner still costs around $1500. They're waterproofas all hell, shockproof, etc., but still a bit much for a watch.The watch I'm wearing now is a Seiko Kinetic Titanium Diver's watch. It'swaterproof down to 200m, shockproof, tritium vial hour marks and hands, has arotating bezel, and the case and band are made entirely from titanium. You'llhave a hard time locating them in the States, but if you do they'll cost youaround $350. They work off an internal winding system that uses the kineticenergy of your moving wrist to keep a rechargeable battery topped off. I'vehad mine for almost a year and haven't had much of any problems with it. Itdoesn't keep time as well as the Rolex (or most battery-powered watches, forthat matter) but for a self-winding watch, it does pretty good.
