WEARING HOOP EARRINGS : I have always loved hoops and own them in various different sizes. I don't wearthe huge ones though. But do wear them almost exclusively unless getting verydressed for evening. Steph ZI've always loved and worn hoops, and not only did I know know they were"back", I didn't know they ever went away! :) I used to wear these large (not enormous) gold twisted hoops a lot, butnow I tend to wear smaller silver ones most often. They are incrediblyversatile and look good dressed up or down. I almost always wearearrings that dangle at least a bit, and I used to wear shoulder-grazersback in high school (the wilder the earrings, the more I liked them backthen). I don't really like gigantic earrings anymore - big and/or danglyis fine, but I swear I had some that were as big as mini-discs! ButIMHO, basic hoops are classic, they never go out of style.
WEARING HOOP EARRINGS : I've got a jewelry box full of large earrings. Mydaughter has looked through it before and just freaked...Ican't wait for her to realize these are back in style! One thing I want to know...how on earth did we standthose huge, heavy things? Or the feathers that tickled? Ohwhat we do for fashion, eh? I am glad to hear this! I'm wearing a pair of silver-twisted-with-gold mediumsize ones right now! Hoops are nice because they are so versatile. :-)Oh, very much so! I got out of the habit of wearing them since I did wordprocessing for years and used dictation equipment with headphones that wouldget caught in the hoops. I work for another company now, and still do wordprocessing, but at least I don't have to use headphones anymore. Now I canstart wearing hoop earrings again. Yes! WEARING HOOP EARRINGS : talk about your quantum leaps! i bet it took quite a few tokes to reachthat hypothesis, eh, einstein?murder? dismemberment? ...take a deep breath and repeat after me:earrings are our friends, they can't hurt us.....hoop earrings can be hilarious. take for example a meeting i attendedlast week. the woman doing the presentation was wearing large gold hoopearrings. she was also using one of those extendable pointers toindicate on the overhead. to make a dramatic *point* she was waving thepointer around and speared it through one earring, pulled the earringoff her head, hurled it across the room, where it landed in a waterpitcher, two tables away.and it certainly cured that woman of wearing hoop earrings. (at leastwhile there is a pointer within two hundred yards....)From: ()Subject: Re: Why Do Black Women Insist On Wearing Hoop Earings? A number of portrait miniatures of nobles show pearl drops and,at a lower social level, the naval tradition of wearing earrings clearlygoesback to at least the sixteenth century, based on contemporary descriptionsand illustrations.Old Mariners used to wear earrings, too. They believed that an earring would improve their sight. Very handy when you're sitting aloft and looking fo reefs. "E. L. However, I've never seen any of these men with bothears pierced - just one (there was no consensus about which ear).An interesting note: just about 30 years before it became popularfor men to pierce their ears and wear earrings, having your earpierced was considered punishment for vagrancy(for men only). I guessit was some sort of branding thing - people would know you had beena vagrant by seeing your ear. Amazing how things change in such a shorttime... Christina McMenemy WEARING HOOP EARRINGS : I think you'll find that the punishment ear piercing was a large, mutilating hole. More of a punch.Absolutely! But probably not as simple decoration. The wearing of a golden earring was purported to be a preventive measure against fevers and colds. Also, the fishermen in the Hebrides would wear a gold coin earringto pay for a proper Christian burial, should they die while at theirwork, the body be lost at sea, and later wash ashore. I'm aware theHebrides are Scotland, not England, but are part of the British Isles. The noble gentlemen as well as the upper middle class gentlemen woreearrings. There are several portraits from period that show them wearingsimple pearl drops. They were normally worn in one ear (you decide which).
